 Urban Streams Restoration Program

The goals of the Urban Streams Restoration Program (USRP) are to:

(1) reduce property damage caused by flooding or erosion;
(2) restore, enhance, or protect the natural ecological values of streams;
(3) promote community involvement, education, and stewardship.

2009 Grant Program News

Updated: March 2, 2009

Due to the State's fiscal crisis and the current freeze on bond funds, the application cycle for the California River Parkways and the Urban Streams Restoration Grant Programs has been delayed. However, the Natural Resources Agency and the Department of Water Resources are moving ahead with the initial review process and anticipate conducting site visits to projects under consideration during Summer/Fall 2009, contingent on the availability of grant funds.

Proposition 84

THE CALIFORNIA RIVER PARKWAYS AND THE URBAN STREAMS RESTORATION GRANT PROGRAM GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION:

The Resources Agency and the California Department of Water Resources are pleased to announce the joint release of the guidelines and application for the California River Parkways (RP) and the Urban Streams Restoration (USR) grant programs. Funding for both programs is available through the Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2006 - Proposition 84. Proposed available funding and timelines are contingent upon enactment of the 2008/09 budget and subsequent budget decisions.

River Parkways: $30.9 million
Urban Streams Restoration: $9.1 million
Application deadline: November 12, 2008
Anticipated project completion date: May 1, 2013

Urban Streams Restoration Program provides grants for a variety of activities, including the following: creek cleanups, eradication of exotic or invasive plants; revegetation efforts; bioengineering bank stabilization projects; channel reconfiguration to improve stream geomorphology and aquatic habitat functions; acquisition of parcels critical for flood management; and coordination of community involvement in projects.

River Parkway Grant Program The Proposition 84 California River Parkways Grant Program in the Resources Agency is a competitive grant program for river parkways projects. Eligible projects must provide public access or be a component of a larger parkway plan that provides public access. Proposition 84 The Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2006 (Proposition 84) authorized $5.388 billion in general obligation bonds to fund safe drinking water, water quality and supply, flood control, waterway and natural resource protection, water pollution and contamination control, state and local park improvements, public access to natural resources, and water conservation efforts.
